Red Chutney Recipe

By | March 27, 2018

This is the last of the chutneys on my list to learn. We call it red chutney because we’re creative like that. I was a bit obsessed with this one as a youngster. I’d eat it with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and since I ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich nearly every day, I ate this chutney nearly every day.

It also tastes divine with grilled cheese sandwiches. Mixed with a bit of ketchup and dip your sandwich. Yum.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 pound of some sort of red, spicy pepper. Here we’re using Thai Chili, but Serrano or Cayenne would also work. Maybe not jalapeƱo.
  • 2 large limes
  • 4 tablespoons of salt

That’s it.

Directions

1. Wash and dry the red peppers very well. Water will ruin this chutney and you’ll have to throw it away in a few days if you don’t let the peppers dry enough.

My mom used the green Serano peppers in this picture for another pickle I don’t care about.

2. Remove the stems from the red chilies.

So lovely.

3. Cut each lime into four pieces.

4. Blend the limes, the chilies and the salt together with a powerful blender. You’ll have to whack the contents to stir and then blend again a few times to get everything to the same consistency.

5. Store in a jelly jar you washed and repurposed. Or any jar.

6. Store in the fridge for up to six months. Surprisingly easy.

Keep the skins on the limes? This looks delicious – thank you!

West Indian people use the wiri wiri pepper or scotch bonnet and call it peppersauce. I like to put it on fruit like mangos, apples, and cucumbers.

That sounds pretty yummy! I’ll have to make some, and just in time for grilling season too! I bet you could concoct a pretty bomb diggity burger with that chutney, red onion, avocado, ohh and maybe brie?

Not sure if you have tried this with rice? We end up eating more rice than we are hungry….we eat with Dosas….not sure if you have tried them during your India visit..
        Have you tried pani puri??

I’ve never tried it with rice, but I would bet it would taste good. Yes, I’ve had pani puri, but it’s never something I crave, so it’s not on my list to learn.
